5 Essential Megadeth Tracks

Thrash metal legends Megadeth are returning to Download this summer! Get ready to headbang.

As we eagerly await their new album ‘The Sick, The Dying… and The Dead’ here’s their top 5 essential tracks.

‘Holy Wars… The Punishment Due’

‘Holy Wars’ is one of Megadeth’s best known tracks. Taken from the Grammy-nominated ‘Rust In Peace’, widely regarded as one of the most important thrash albums ever, it’s an absolute must-listen. Fun fact: Dave Mustaine has said the lyrics were inspired by both the conflicts in Northern Ireland, and the Marvel superhero Punisher.

‘a Tout Le Monde’

The music video for ‘A Tout Le Monde’ was banned by MTV, who claimed the song was pro-suicide. Dave, however, revealed the truth of what the song is about back in 1994: “It’s not a suicide song. It was my impression of what I would like to say to people, if I had say, 3 seconds to do so in life before I died I’d say to the entire world, to all my friends, I love you all, and now I must go.”

A remake of the song was released on Megadeth’s 2007 album ‘United Abominations’ featuring Cristina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil.

‘Sweating Bullets’

The third single from ‘Countdown To Extinction’ (another Grammy-nominated Megadeth album), ‘Sweating Bullets’ is a song about paranoia and battling with your inner self. Dave wrote it about himself, stating: “There’s someone we all confer with; it’s called our conscience. Some people cannot control their other side; it takes them over. Everybody has that psychotic side. Everyone has a thing that will make them snap.”

‘Peace Sells’

‘Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?’ was Megadeth’s first album on a major label, Capitol Records, and launched them towards metal superstardom. The title track became one of the band’s biggest hits and remains a mainstay in their setlists to date. The video is, of course, a stone cold classic: “This IS the news!”.

‘Symphony Of Destruction’

No Megadeth essentials list would be complete without ‘Symphony Of Destruction’. Arguably their biggest song, it charted around the world, has been covered by various bands, and in true Megadeth style, the video once again caused controversy on MTV. Not bad for a song that was inspired by a headache.
