The wait is over, the day has finally arrived and the Download family is once again back together! The sun was shining down as campers stepped over the sacred threshold into Donington Park to begin the biggest rock and metal party of the year…#DL2018!
Get some serious FOMO as we recap on all of the awesome pre-show fun that went down on Thursday.
Charity Football Match
Kicking off the day in The Village was the Charity Football Match, which saw over 100 people playing a whopping 15 games of football. Taking place in the zorbing football area, highlights included the Download Boardies (under the name of Party Chat FC) going head-to-head with Michu In The Pit (aka Camp Loner) in a nail bitingly tense match, which saw the Boardies going onto victory!
After a thrilling knockout first round, followed by some tense quarter and semi final matches, team Wenger were crowned overall winners! A big shout out to On The Day 1 who came second and The Walking Sesh and Party Chat FC for being ace sports.
Thanks to all of those who took part over £500 was raised for Teenage Cancer Trust – a most excellent result!
Up on the hill in The Village a much more serene scene was being made as DO:OM Yoga plunged The Sidesplitter Stage into a state of blissful zen. To a doom drenched soundtrack Downloaders focussed on their core strength and breathing to prepare for the weekend of rock n’ roll mayhem ahead. Encouraged by the instructor to take a moment to witness the sensations in their body, Downloaders laid back on the grass and listened to ambient drones whilst channelling their energy cycles. Namaste.
Missed DO.OM Yoga yesterday? It’s on every morning in the Sidesplitter stage at 11.00 – 12.30 on Friday and 09.00 – 10.30 on Saturday and Sunday.
Download is one big family and each summer we do what all famillies love to do – have a huge BBQ. On Thursday afternoon some dedicated Downloaders sank drinks and ate delicious grub in the guest area as they joined Download Promoter Andy Copping and Site Manager John Probyn to talk everything Download.
John Probyn gave a joke filled speech about all of the exciting new site developments at Download this year. As John said, you asked and we answered as this year there’s two campsite entrances, 30% more space in the campsite and more toilets in the arena. Plus, it’s the first year for ts the new Eco Camp for environmentally minded Downloaders.
Andy made all of the Downloaders feel proud when he revealed that Download has now eclipsed Monsters Of Rock by running for an impressive 16 consecutive years. In it from the very beginning since 2002, Andy knows how bands values the festival as much as us fans. This year was no exception as he shared that both Guns N’ Roses and Ozzy Osbourne insisted that their 2018 UK festival appearance had to be at Download.
Andy also introduced us to his “three banderos” – Steph, Kam and Sean – who work tirelessly alongside him to book the biggest and best bands for Download.
Late in the afternoon The Doghouse shook into action when Kalloused took to the stage to kickstart a night of non-stop entertainment. Kalloused showed they’re a band who know how to do heavy as they made The Doghouse howl with tracks from their debut album, ‘Damn You Believer’.
Circus Of Horrors
The hype continued in The Doghouse as Circus Of Horrors brought in their troupe of magnificent and wildly weird performers to get the evening started with some seriously hot performances. The crowd cheered and gasped in total awe as a guy drilled holes into his nose, a woman climbed a ladder as whilst expertly holding a knife in her mouth with a sword balanced on its tip and another performer put burning flames into her mouth. The show’s intensity hit fever pitch when two performers took skipping rope to a whole new level by adding lots of fire. As always Circus Of Horrors at Download was something no one will ever forget.
Boardie Takeover – The Doghouse
The Boardie Takeover made sure campers got their #DL2018 off to a seriously rocking start over in The Doghouse as the sun went down. In a packed out tent campers put their horns in the air to new bands Visions, Altered Sky, Departed and more and kept partying nearly all night long to Uprawr vs Newscastle Rise club night.
