We are extremely proud to announce Download Festival 2018 has been awarded the gold standard by Attitude is Everything for our commitment to accessibility.
Attitude Is Everything is a disabled led charity dedicated to improving deaf and disabled people’s access to live music. Gideon Feldman, Head of Programmes and Business Development at the organisation said of the award: “The commitment Download have shown to accessibility and inclusion clearly sits at the heart of the festival. Download deserves to be recognised for the outstanding work they have shown this year and over the past years”.
Download 2018 was our most accessible in our 15 year history as we introduced a series of major changes to improve the festival experience for our Disabled Access DL’ers. For the first time at Donington we had viewing platforms available across all of our stages, so everyone could enjoy the 100+ bands on our line up. The Zippo Encore Stage viewing platform was also rotated to make sure you had an unrivalled view of the stage.
In another first we were delighted to welcome British Sign Language (BSL) Performance Interpreters to the festival for the first time on the Main Stage and the Zippo Encore Stage. A BSL Access service was also on hand with Deaf and hearing coordinators, registered qualified interpreters and emergency 24 hour support.
Over in the campsites multiple improvements were made to make it an easy and comfortable weekend for all of our campers. Downloaders coming to the campsite could take advantage of a near 24 hour shuttle bus service, provided by Castle Donington Volunteer Centre. Once onsite campers could drive right up to their pitch to drop off any equipment and 50 charging points were available to wheelchair users in the charging tent.
Ian Donaldson, Access Planning and Deliver Manager said, “For Download 2018 we set ourselves a target to ensure that we did everything within our powers to give our disabled customers the best experience that we could. To receive this recognition from Attitude is Everything is great achievement for the Access Team and whole Download team, but most importantly for the Download disabled customers who come back year after year.”
We’ve always been passionate about making sure Download can be experienced to the full by all DL’ers, and we will continue to strive to improve accessibility even further when we return for #DL2019 on 14-16 June 2019 \m/.
