Last month on socials you submitted your questions for Ice Nine Kills. We picked the best ones to put to frontman Spencer Charnas in a very special interview.
You asked, he answered! See below…
When you start writing for an album, do you already know which films you’re going to focus on, or do you write for loads and then pick the best ones? – Nadja
Spencer: I basically just gather a big list of movies that we haven’t covered yet that I think would make compelling songs. Then I just go through the list and some stuff ends up hitting the cutting room floor (pun intended). But yeah, usually I have a good idea of what films I want to cover, then just start sitting down, putting pen to paper and strumming my guitar.
Any plans for a ‘Silver Scream 3’? – Iain
Spencer: Well, I’d tell you, but then I’d have to kill you… there’s no way I’d give away something like that!
What’s the wildest or funniest tour story you have? – Klaudiusz
Spencer: We were playing a show, I think it was in Providence, Rhode Island. And this biker gang were there and kind of heckling us, and we’re just trying to get through our set, but they kept throwing stuff at us, they threw a bottle at me. So after the show, we invited them to fight in a back alley. And we cornered them, and we killed every last one of ’em. I’m talking splatter movie kills. I ripped one of the guy’s heads off, I shot one of the guys in the face, and we just f*cking killed them. So that’s probably the craziest tour story.
Either that, or y’know, the time we got to play with Metallica.
Which horror icon do you think you’d have the best chance of survival against? – Cassie
Spencer: That’s a difficult one… I guess Freddy (Krueger), because I rarely sleep, so hopefully I wouldn’t meet him! Based on a game of odds and statistics, I think Freddy.
If you could choose just ONE horror movie to watch, what would it be? – Jack
Spencer: Probably ‘Scream’. That’s my favourite. It just incorporates all of the other horror movies I love into one big melting pot of greatness.
On the recording studio whiteboard for ‘Welcome to Horrorwood’ there were two songs crossed out – will we ever find out what they were? – Rory
Spencer: You may find out what one of ’em is… but I can’t promise anything.
Can we expect anything special from your Download set? – Amelia Jade
Spencer: Well it’s the first time for us playing Download! We’ve always wanted to play it. We’re just honoured to be included in such a great festival, the line ups over the years have been insane. You can expect the unexpected, put it that way. We’re stoked to bring our brand of brutality to the Download stage.
