PENGSHUi are the Winners of Kerrang! Radio’s Finding Fresh Blood Competition!

The winners of Kerrang! Radio’s Finding Fresh Blood Competition and your Friday Avalanche Stage openers at #DL2019 are…PENGSHUi.

The grime punk trio triumphed over thousands of entries to be crowned the winners of the competition by our very own Download Festival promoters and a panel of Kerrang! Radio presenters.

Download Festival booker Andy Copping said, “A big thanks to everyone that applied, and to the Fresh Blood team who had to narrow down thousands of bands to the shortlist we were given, but PENGSHUi have something special with their effortless blend of metal and grime, they are the perfect opener for The Avalanche Stage this year. Get yourselves down on Friday afternoon, and watch history being made as I can see big things for them!”

PENGSHUi are Illaman on vocals, Fatty on Bass and Pravvy Prav on drums. The trio have already made huge waves with their riotous raw mix of riff and raps and we cannot wait for you to see them at Download 2019.

Kerrang! Radio’s Alex Baker said: “PENGSHUi are without a doubt one of the most exciting bands on planet earth today and their win is a testament to their unbelievable, powerful, innovative sound! Ultimate vibes. They are going to light The Avalanche Stage UP!!”

Check out our interview below with PENGSHUi drummer Pravvy Prav to find out what it means to to the band to win Finding Fresh Blood, who their biggest influence is (hint: it’s a 90s pop icon) and why their Avalanche Stage set will  be “proper gnarly”.

What was your reaction when you found out you’d won the Finding Fresh Blood competition?

ARE YOU MAD BRUV?!

What does it mean to you to be the winners of Fresh Blood and to play Download?

It’s an honour and was a massive surprise to us. We didn’t know that all these conversations were being had. Want to really thank Alex Baker from Kerrang! for putting us in a position where something like this could be possible.

Have you ever attended Download as fans? What was it like?

Was so sick. Saw Meshuggah, Anthrax, Lamb of God, Helmet, and Slayer. All in one day. What else can anyone ask for? Download set the standard for metal festivals worldwide. The whole thing was just popping off.

How did PENGSHUi get started?

Fatty got the whole thing popping. He had a bunch of ideas and wanted to work with a proper rapper who also really understood metal. Dave is that guy. Dave is a ridiculous rapper who grew up playing in metal bands. Fatty and I had already done some bits together and we both grew up playing in very heavy bands as well as playing lots of live dance / bass / hip hop music so it made sense that the 3 of us would get in a room and have a bubble.

Your music blends elements of grime and rap with metal and punk. Who are your influences?

We all love Mariah Carey to be fair. So Mariah, certain metal dons, certain dubstep dons, certain hip hop dons and drum & bass dons. Couple folk dons too.

What will you be bringing to the Avalanche Stage?

Proper vibes mate. It’s loud and bassy as hell, with super raw energy. It’s proper gnarly.

How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard you before in three words?

Grime meets punk.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at Download?

Carcass and Tool.

WWE NXT UK is coming to Download! What would your wrestler names be?

Turtle Neck, The Cudgel, and The Cranker.

If you could cover a song by one of our headliners – Def Leppard, Slipknot or Tool – what would you cover?

Def Leppard – Love Bites.

We’ve got Old Sarum Tattoo on site, what new tattoo would you have done?

Ohhhhh. Fatty and Dave have loads of tats. I have none. It would have to be one of a snake killing a panther on my ass cheek because I lost a bet to my mate Snake from The Upbeats.

Why should Downloaders watch PENGSHUi at DL2019?

It’s f**king heavy, f**king fun, and definitely not like anything else you ever heard. The vibrations are strong.

You heard the man. Catch PENGSHUi at Download 2019 on 14th-16th June in Donington Park, as well as headliners Def Leppard, Slipknot, and Tool plus many more.
