Riff Radar: Sleep Token

If the hype surrounding mysterious masked metallers Sleep Token has somehow passed you by, don’t worry we’ve got the lowdown.

In this month’s Riff Radar, we’ve got everything you need to know about the band – except who’s behind those masks.

the line up….

We’re not sure. The masked figure who fronts them is known only as Vessel.

sounds like…

Bon Iver meets Periphery.

background…

Sleep Token arrived on the scene back in 2016 with their debut EP ‘One’, which instantly ignited a buzz around the band. Who was behind this mysterious, masked collective? To add to the mystery the band declared that they exist to worship and share the message of an ancient deity known as Sleep. Their second EP the aptly-titled ‘Two’ dropped in 2017 and consisted of tracks referring to historical civilisations: Jericho, Calcutta and Nazareth.

Meanwhile, the hype machine was well underway. Their tracks were spun by the likes of Annie Mac and Daniel P Carteron Radio 1. Whilst their headline UK shows sold out almost instantly as everyone wanted a glimpse of the enigmatic metallers.

Since then Sleep Token have gone on to play shows with the likes of Babymetal and Amaranthe, tour the US, and headline even bigger venues on their home turf.

They finally released their debut album ‘Sundowning’ last year to rave reviews. So, there’s absolutely no excuse to be sleeping on these guys (pardon the pun). Tune in. Worship.

the critics say…

“The band have shown they can create vast episodes that exist primarily within their ancient universe, while also feeling very vulnerable and human at their core. That alone should be reason enough to hope that Sleep Token’s secretive allure stays intact for a long time to come.”Kerrang!
