Rock Out at the UK Air Guitar Championships at Download 2019!

The UK Air Guitar Championships at Download Festival in connection with and governed by the official Air Guitar World Championships adheres to the following rules, competition outline and guidelines:

AIR GUITAR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ENTRY GUIDELINES

The purpose of the Air Guitar World Championships is to promote world peace. According to the ideology of the air guitar, wars end, global warming stops, and all the other bad things disappear if everybody in the world plays air guitar. To honour this purpose, at the end of every Air Guitar World Championships competition, all the people of the world are called upon to simultaneously play the air guitar for saving the world.

1. Invisible instrument and dress code

  • The instrument of the contestant must be invisible, i.e. air
  • The contestant can use either an electric or an acoustic air guitar – or both.
  • There is no dress code, but contestants may use props as they wish. (However, all real musical instruments are forbidden).

2. How to enter

  • If you wish to enter the UK Air Guitar Championships at Download Festival you must submit the Application Form by noon on Friday 14th June. Be sure to read the Prize Promotion Notice before entering.
  • You can choose to enter any of the six heats of the competition on Friday 14th & Saturday 15th June listed below with the chance to be invited back to the Semi Finals and Grand Final on Sunday 16th June.
  • You must answer all the questions on the entry form in full and print off your entry form to bring with you to the SINDROME for your chosen heat (a smartphone screen-grab is also fine!)
  • You must arrive at the SINDROME no later than the arrival times listed below
  • Once you have arrived at the SINDROME and identified yourself to a member of the management team you will be asked to wait in the SINDROME greenroom for the heat to start.
  • Please note if you enter the completion you must be available to fly to Finland on Tuesday 20th August to join the Air Guitar World Championships event. Here you will compete in the Grand Final of the competition against the other Air Guitar Champions from across the world on Friday 23rd August. PLUS, be available to head back to Download in 2020 to retain your crown!

3. program of the competition

In the heats, contestants are invited to perform the first 60 seconds of a song (of your choice) from the UK Air Guitar Spotify Playlist, against other entrants. There are SIX heats in total, split over two days. The best TWO contestants from each heat will progress to the semi-finals on Sunday 16th June.

To take part in the heats you must fill in an Application Form, selecting which heat you wish to take part in, and telling us which song you wish to rock out to (in the heats).

Friday 14th June:

HEAT 1

  • Registration time at the SINDROME: 4pm
  • 1st contestant invited to stage: 4.30pm

HEAT 2

  • Registration time at the SINDROME: 5pm
  • 1st contestant invited to stage: 5.30pm

HEAT 3

  • Registration time at the SINDROME: 6.15pm
  • 1st contestant invited to stage: 6.45pm

Saturday 15th June:

HEAT 4

  • Registration time at the SINDROME: 4pm
  • 1st contestant invited to stage: 4.30pm

HEAT 5

  • Registration time at the SINDROME: 5pm
  • 1st contestant invited to stage: 5.30pm

HEAT 6

  • Registration time at the SINDROME: 6.15pm
  • 1st contestant invited to stage: 6.45pm

semi finals

From the heats, 12 contestants will take part in the semi finals on Sunday 16th June. Semi finalists will again be invited to perform the first 60 seconds of their chosen song – either the same song as in the heats, or a new song from the same playlist (chosen on the day)

There will be TWO semi finals, with each semi final having TWO winners that will progress to the grand final. Contestants will be split (6 in each semi final), depending on which heat they took part in. Semi final times and details can be viewed below:

SEMI FINAL 1

For the winners of heats 1, 2 and 3 – Six semi-finalists in total.

  • Registration time at the SINDROME: 4pm
  • 1st Semi Finalist invited to stage: 4.30pm

SEMI FINAL 2

For the winners of heats 4, 5 and 6 – Six semi-finalists in total.

  • Registration time at the SINDROME: 5pm
  • 1st contestant invited to stage: 5.30pm

grand final

In the Grand Final the FOUR finalists from the semi finals will this time perform TWO different songs over TWO rounds. Again, the duration of each song will be 60 seconds each, with the rounds consisting of the following:

ROUND 1:

First song (60 seconds long), chosen by the finalist from a list of 34 tracks from the UK Air Guitar Spotify playlist on the day– This song can not be a repeat performance from the previous heats.

ROUND 2:

Second song (60 seconds long) from the SAME playlist – This time chosen for the contestants by the judges immediately before the Grand Final.

The grand final will take place at 7pm on Sunday 16th June. Finalists will be required to register at the SINDROME at 6.30pm.

4. judges of the competition

The judges of the competition consider the following performance aspects when making their decisions:

  • Originality
  • The ability to be taken over by the music
  • Stage presence
  • Technical merit
  • Artistic impression
  • Airness

Each member of the jury gives marks from 1.0 to 5.0 for a performance. The contestants with the highest combined score at the end of each stage will progress in the competition. For the Grand Final we will ALSO be judging the winner by who gets the best reaction from the Crowd.

5. prizes

The winner will receive flights to Oulu in Finland plus accommodation on 23rd – 26th August to compete in the Air Guitar World Championships, plus 2x VIP passes to Download 2020. Runners up win Download merchandise and tickets for two to Download 2020.
